Class News

Dear Families,

As we all know this week is Catholic Schools week and it is off to a terrific start!  Just a reminder about the rest of the weeks events.

  • Tomorrow is Teddy Bear Day.  Students should bring in one teddy bear and dress in their pajamas.  We have tons of fun activities planned for the day!
  • Friday is Teacher Appreciation and Sports day. Students should dress in sports gear (jersey’s, favorite team t-shirts/sweatshirts/hoodies etc.).
  • There is a 12pm dismissal and there is NO AFTERCARE.

Also just as a reminder please only do the homework that is assigned that day.  I have noticed that many of the students have gone ahead in the math homework specifically and they are working on material that has not yet been taught.  The only page that should be done is the page that is assigned for that day’s homework.

Thanks for your understanding!

Ms. Saldana

Some News in 1A

It is hard to believe we are almost half way done with 1st grade!  The time has really flown.  I am so proud at how far each and every student has come and oh how they have grown!  This week we will be having our first spelling test and will begin a new chapter in math.  We are also learning all about digraphs and diphthongs in reading and long vowel words!

At the end of the month we have lot of exciting things happening and one of those things is Catholic Schools Week!  During Catholic Schools Week we will be having a school wide spelling bee.  We will choose the top 2 spellers from our class after having a class spelling bee to represent us in front of the school.  Please find the list below of the words we will be using in our spelling bee.  Feel free to study them daily!

How to Draw a Christmas Tree - Bringing the Holidays to Paper

Dear 1A Families,

I cannot believe that it is already the week we go on Christmas Break!  The time has really flown by.  Here are a few reminders for this week:

  • Tomorrow is Ugly Sweater or Ugly Shirt Day (uniforms are required if your child is not dressing in their ugly Christmas gear)
  • Our Christmas Concert is at 10am sharp on Thursday.  You may take your child after the concert if you would like just please make sure you sign them out.
  • THERE IS NO AFTERCARE THURSDAY

School resumes January 2nd after Christmas break and we have some exciting changes in our classroom to help us prepare for 2nd grade!

One of those changes will be that students will now be required to bring home their books for homework to prepare them for the responsibility of second grade.  We will also begin taking weekly spelling tests beginning the 2nd week of January and reading assessments for the stories we read in class.  Writer’s workshop will also begin sometime in January and our first writing topic will be personal narratives!

Your children have been working so hard and they are now ready to take the next step in their learning journey!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Ms. Saldana

Here are some updates in Saldana’s Stars:

So many wonderful things have been going on in our classroom from our ELF’S ARRIVAL to PRACTICING FOR OUR CHRISTMAS CONCERT.

The holiday season has sure kicked off!

In religion we have been learning about Advent and we began to delve into the Nativity Story.  We have been discussing daily that we love gifts from Santa but we can never forget that Jesus is the REASON for the season!

In math we are finishing up chapter 3 where we learned all about subtraction, using addition to check our subtraction facts, fact families and related addition and subtraction facts.

In ELA we have been talking all about different types of sentences such as statements, interrogative, and exclamatory.  We have also been learning all about beginning and ending blends!  The children are really progressing in their reading and I could not be more proud!

I am sure you have seen your child come home with readers in their take home folder that we have been using in class.  It is important to keep those and have your child practice them each week.  The more they read the more fluent they become.  Repetition is key in developing readers.

Reminders:

  • Report cards will be online Friday
  • Santa Shop is the week of the 11th (our class goes Thursday)
  • The 21st is our school Christmas Sing a long.
  • 21st early Dismissal NO AFTERCARE

In Science…we are learning all about our senses and the fall season.

Back to School Night Recap…

It was so lovely meeting many of you at back to school night last night!

I just wanted to recap some of the things that we discussed for you to refer back to and for those who were unable to make it:

  • I use the Remind App to communicate most of the time for everyday messages and reminders.  Please send a text to 81010 with saldanasst in the body to join our class.  You can also message me there as well.
  • I do post on the blog but for bigger, longer items and updates about what we are learning.  Remind has a cap on the characters we use so that is more effective for quick everyday communication.
  • I usually respond to messages within in 24 hours which is our school policy so please allow time for me to respond in that time period as during the day I am not seeing messages or able to respond when I am in the classroom.
  • Please check your child’s homework folder daily as they also get other items that you may need to see such as notices etc.
  • Snacks:  Please send in a healthy snack and something they can practice opening on their own. There is only one of me and 15 of them so snack can be a bit crazy when I am peeling fruit and opening packages/containers for many of them.  Snack is also only 15 minutes so please send one or two snacks in only.
  • Homework is due back Friday.  Please keep the flash cards and practice sentences home so that you can continue to practice them with your child.  A little bit should be done every day, I have broken up what should be done each day so that they get a little practice every day.

If you have any other questions please reach out and I would. be happy to answer them!
