Curriculum—Grades 6 through 8
Everything a child encounters in his/her school day from the minute the student enters the school building until he/she leaves to go home is considered the curriculum. This includes classroom experiences, lunchroom, gym, recess, and prayer as well as other activities that occur during the school day.
The Junior High curriculum at Sacred Heart School is centered on preparing each student for the high school experience. In the Junior High the students switch classes for 45 minute periods. They are taught to be organized and prepared for each class. Students are responsible for bringing all the materials they will need for each class, just like in high school. They are also exposed to having different teachers for each class, and thus must adapt to different teacher personalities and teaching styles.
The curriculum consists of:
- Religion: Students are taught the theory of the catholic faith with Scripture based texts which are enhanced through classroom discussions. The students receive the sacrament of Confirmation in 8th grade.
- Language Arts: The students learn the mechanics of grammar, whichp results in more creative writing styles. Focus is placed on writing cohesive essays and comprehensive research papers that include “Works Cited” pages.
- Reading: The students are exposed to different genres in literature. They examine short stories, poetry, fables, and novels. Emphasis is placed on comprehension and vocabulary development.
- Mathematics: The 6th and 7th grades focus on pre-Algebra concepts and reinforce basic skills. The 8th grade uses the University of Chicago Algebra I text which mirrors a high school Algebra I course.
- Social Studies: In 6th grade the students concentrate on World History and geography. The students spend two years studying US History from colonization to current events. Map skills are emphasized on all levels.
- Science: Students explore Life, Earth, and Physical science each year. The material is tailored to the specific grade level. Class work is supplemented with laboratory activities.
- Music, Art, Computer Technology, World Language (Spanish),
Physical Education and Health round out the curriculum offerings.
