Curriculum—Grade 5

Everything that a child encounters in his/her school day from the minute the student enters the school building until he/she leaves to go home is considered curriculum. This includes classroom experiences, lunchroom, gym, recess and prayer as well as any other activity that occurs during the school day. Whatever a child encounters in school is part of the curriculum.

The fifth grade program at Sacred Heart School is designed not only to meet the curriculum set forth by the Archdiocese of Newark but also to prepare the students for Junior High. The students continue to build on the skills they have acquired in the primary grades.

The curriculum consists of:
  • Religion three times a week focusing on the sacraments

  • Health New this year as part of the curriculum. Along with twice weekly instruction, Fifth graders also participate in the 10 week D.A.R.E. program through the Lyndhurst Police Department

  • Math: Continuing to build on the basics (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) along with number sense, geometry, algebra and probability. The textbook used is Everyday Mathematics.

  • Reading: By fifth grade students should be proficient readers. The Reading Street program exposes the students to a variety of literary genres and reading skills such as comparing and contrasting, generalization, plot and theme, summarization, and main ideas. Trade books are also used.

  • Language Arts: Students are immersed in the parts of speech and their use in the English language. Students hone their writing skills through different exercises such as writing a personal narrative, business letters, how-to articles, etc. Proof reading and editing are used in the writing process. Also, students write in a personal journal each morning. The textbook used is Voyages in English.

  • Science: Students continue their exploration of life, physical and earth science through observation and the use of scientific methods.

  • Social Studies: The curriculum focuses on the Americas. There is a heavy concentration on American history in the first two terms and a focus on Mexico, Canada, Central America and South America in the third term

  • Gym (twice a week)

  • Computers, Music, Spanish and Art (once a week)
