Curriculum—Grade 3

Everything that a child encounters in his/her school day from the minute the student enters the school building until he/she leaves to go home is considered curriculum. This includes classroom experiences, lunchroom, gym, recess and prayer as well as any other activity that occurs during the school day. Whatever a child encounters in school is part of the curriculum.

The third grade program at Sacred Heart School reinforces the groundwork provided by the two previous primary grades. The students are introduced to note-taking, report-writing, dictionary skills, and the ever important fundamentals of the multiplication tables. Literacy skills are honed to prepare them for the future grades where reading becomes paramount to learning.

Our curriculum consists of:
  • Daily instruction in Religion

  • Daily instruction in Math

  • Daily instruction in Language Arts that includes the following areas:
    1. Reading: Through regular reading of fiction and non-fiction at an independent level, students will use self-monitoring, comprehension, graphic organizers, and previously learned strategies. Concepts about print/text, phonological awareness, decoding and word recognition, fluency, reading strategies before, during and after reading, inquiry and research, vocabulary and concept development, comprehension skills and response to text, are key elements of the reading program.

    2. Writing: through daily writing in many subject areas, students will use reflection, creativity, developmentally appropriate mechanics and spelling, to demonstrate intended purpose and clear communication. Writing as a process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, post-writing) and as a product (mechanics and spelling, writing forms, audiences and purposes) using a variety of genres is taught.

    3. Speaking: Giving feedback related to topics under discussion; support an opinion with details; use notes, pictures, and graphic organizers to plan and execute an oral presentation.

    4. Listening: Follow at least three-step oral directions; paraphrase information shared by others; listen to a story and summarize main ideas.

    5. Viewing: Demonstrate an awareness of different media forms and how they contribute to communication; recognize the effects of visual arts on one's moods and emotions.
